Things to Do
We have put together a
list of some interesting things to do up here in the Gakona area. Feel
free to ask us about these extra activities for your trip.

- Guided fishing provided here at the lodge or
if you want to go on overnights or down to Valdez, there are
many great guides we can hook you up with.
- Rentals to do your own fishing
here on the Gulkana River or at one of the many lakes in the
area such as Tangle Lakes, Paxon Lake, Myers Lake or Summit
Lake. There are hiking trails and many great fishing holes
around the lakes.
- Copper River tours to see a part of the
countryside not visible from the highway.
- Flight seeing charters with bush pilots with
a long history in Alaska. These guys can spot wildlife
that most of us would miss!
- There are many turnouts along the highways
for pictures and meditating while gazing at the beautiful
Wrangell-St Elias Mountains.
- In Glennallen, there is a wonderful wildlife
museum with every Alaskan animal represented including a world
record brown bear. This is a truly great place to visit.
- In Glennallen, there is also a walking trail
with a map to guide you. A nice place to spend a little
time.
- The Wrangell-St Elias Visitors Center is on
the Richardson Highway as you go towards Valdez. There are
exhibits and lots of information on the history of this area.
- South of here going to the only entrance into
the park is a little town called Chitina. It's a great
place to do a little shopping and see some Copper River fish
wheels or dip-netting. You can even hike on some old
trails.
- On the way to Chitina, you may like to stop
and see Liberty Falls and hike around the area. There is
also a nice picnic ground to enjoy your lunch.
- Passing through Chitina, you can
proceed to McCarthy, a very old town at the end of the road.
From there you must visit Kennicott Copper Mine.
This is an outstanding trip! If you don't want to drive
you can charter a small plane to take you back. You will not
regret the time you spend at the incredible site.
